Never Split the Difference
Negotiation is not a battle of arguments — it is a search for information and influence under pressure. Label emotions, ask how-based questions, and trade things that cost you little for things that matter.
The line I kept
“No deal is better than a bad deal.”
The core claim
People decide from emotion first; tactical empathy (hearing the other side accurately) lowers defensiveness and uncovers what they really need to say yes.
What to steal
- Mirroring — repeat the last few words; silence does the work.
- Labeling — “It sounds like…” / “It seems like…” to surface unspoken fears.
- Calibrated “How” questions — force them to solve your problem in their words.
- “That’s right” vs “You’re right” — aim for genuine alignment, not placation.
What to ignore
Treating every situation like a hostage crisis. The FBI frame is vivid; adapt tone to low-stakes daily conversations without theatrical scripts.
This week
In one hard conversation, open with a neutral label (“It sounds like…”) and ask one calibrated “How am I supposed to…?” instead of pushing your position first.
