Questions
Can I try it before buying?
Yes: the demo opens the real editor with a copy of this site, at /almanack/demo. Write and publish an article, change the colours, reorder the home page, look at the visit numbers. Nothing you do there is saved.
Do I need to know how to code?
Not to use it. Writing, publishing, courses and colours are all done in the editor. The code plan does ask for a little comfort with GitHub and Cloudflare; the setup plan does that part for you.
What does it cost to run?
Your domain name, and for most personal sites nothing else. The site runs on Cloudflare's free plan and your content lives in a free GitHub repository. Stripe, Creem or PayPal takes its usual fee on course sales; there is no extra fee on top.
Do I need plugins for security, SEO or statistics?
No. There is no server or database to attack, no plugin to update, and Cloudflare filters the traffic in front of it. The editor asks for a password and a code from an authenticator app. The site makes its sitemap, RSS feed and page descriptions itself, and counts its visits without cookies, in the editor.
Where is my content kept?
In your own GitHub repository, as Markdown files, one per article, note or course. You can read them, download them, or move them to another tool whenever you like. Paid lessons sit in a separate private repository.
Can I sell courses without a monthly platform?
Yes, and free or paid challenges too. Sales pages, Stripe, Creem or PayPal checkout with promo codes and VAT, access by email link with no student accounts, a player with transcripts and checklists, and video links that expire, so a copied link stops working.
Can I change how it looks?
The accent colour, link style and page background are set in the editor and apply to the whole site. Deeper changes (fonts, layouts, new pages) are regular code, or part of the Made for you plan.
Can I buy as an individual?
The code, yes. Set up for you and Made for you are services for businesses: a company, a freelancer or a sole trader, invoiced to the business. No business yet? Say so in your request.
Is it open source?
No. You get all of the source code, to change as you like, with a licence for one website: each site needs its own, and the code can't be resold or shared.
